The Beachhouse at South Milton Sands
9th March 2020
Have you ever been to South Milton Sands? It's one of the most popular beaches down here in South Devon, you often cannot see the sands in the summer, it offers the most beautiful sunsets you will ever see and it's often calm water means its perfect for paddleboarding, although, you do have to watch out for the jellyfish!
Perched right above the beach is The Beachhouse, a hot spot of good food and a queue for ice creams as long as the beach in the summer! With just 5 tables inside, parties of two are often joined by other couples on long benches, getting a table inside is often impossible without a wait and the outside tables are often filled in the sunny winter days with people in big coats and woolly hats, all tucking into their hot yummy food.
It's just gone 12 on a early March Friday afternoon, we are waiting outside in the bright sunshine for a table to become free, the weather isn't sure what it wants to do with itself, it was raining half an hour ago... a party of 6 pile off a table so we can take their place and we slide into the high benches.
We wait for the big menu to be slid over to us and we order fresh fish, mussels cooked in garlic and thyme for Lucy and I, Mum choose the special of scallops with hazelnnut, with chips and garlic bread to share. We watch the chefs cook up a storm and chat to the girl about Bonnie, she remembers we brought her in last time. For a moment we thought we would be sharing a table with some friends but a bigger tables comes up so they head down there.
The decor is rustic seaside, big bright sand buckets bring cutlery to the table and huge white gorgeous jugs of water sit perfectly on rustic tables. There are fresh flowers next to trivial pursuit questions to chat over while you wait for food.
The mussels are big and juicy, in season and fresh from the sea, the chips are those beautiful skin on ones and the garlic bread is cheesy...
Eventually, we pile back out again as someone else awaits a table, this time huddled under the tiny veranda keeping out from the rain.
If you get a chance to go here, go, there isn't even a question, book a table if you can, sit outside for ice cream in the summer or inside as they throw open the big windows.
Let me know if you need a friend...
